Message setting it to max heat temp setting during the coolant filling and while the engine is running.
When the top rad hose starts to get warm, it's a signal that the thermostat has started to open. Continue to run the engine with the rad cap off. Ensure that the filling point of your rad is the highest point in the car. You may need to jack up the driver's side a tad or drive up onto a couple of planks on that side.

Before I go on, what was the color of the coolant that was spilling out?
What is the color of the coolant when it rises to the top of the filler neck?

Once it gets up to near operating temperature, it may want to spit some coolant out of the filler neck. What I usually do when it gets to this point is slightly move the throttle cable which will draw some of the coolant fluid down. At that precise point, I top off the rad and quickly replace the rad cap before letting off on the throttle.

If you've got a bad heater core, it could introduce problems to the rest of the cooling system.

The thermostat's little open hole on the peripheral should be positioned at the top.
